Check before entering an event:

Distance

Can you comfortably swim the required distance in the pool?

Wetsuit or Non-Wetsuit

Some events specify wetsuits as mandatory, others disallow wetsuits.

A wetsuit will give you some protection against the cold. It also gives you added buoyancy in the water so you will typically go faster.

Choose your event carefully and ensure that you practice in conditions as close to those you will experience in your event using your chosen attire.

Wetsuits can be hired or purchased. Choose a wetsuit that is specifically designed for swimming as these will provide flexibility around the shoulders.

Sea / River / Lake

Read up on the venue if possible. Sea swims and large lakes are typically harder as there is tide as well as current and chop to contend with.

Support Boat Requirements

Some events require you to provide your own support boat (typically a canoe), others will provide their own safety cover.

Below is a list of Open Water Swim events for 2011 that we feel may be of interest to our swimmers.

Open water swimming can be much more challenging than pool swimming as dealing with the elements becomes a big part of the swim. If you are choosing your first event then please consider the notes at the bottom of this page.

If in doubt about whether a particular event is right for you email us at Red Top with information on which event and category etc you are considering.

Note that this is just a small selection of the events taking place in 2011. Let us know if you feel there are others that should be included.

Additionally, join our facebook page to chat to other Red Top swimmers about events.
